At the beginning of the 20th century, Piazza del Duomo was already the beating heart of the city. The "Carosello dei Tram" (Tram Carousel), an intricate system of tramways that characterised the square until 1926, can be seen in the foreground. In the background, half-hidden by one of the domes of the future Rinascente, the chimney of the thermoelectric plant on Via Santa Radegonda can be seen, built to illuminate Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. On the right, you can see the wing of Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace) known as "manica longa", demolished in 1937 to make way for the construction of the Arengario.
