"Milan Duomo, Royal Palace and the Rebecchino, 1864-1875

Francesco Heyland, a well-known photographer in nineteenth-century Milan, wanting to shoot the front of Palazzo Reale, immortalizes in this shot a very particular glimpse of Piazza del Duomo.

The Cathedral only partially shows its facade while on the right stands the Rebecchino, a district that took its name from an inn whose sign bore the image of a musical instrument, the rebec. It was precisely in this maze of businesses, courtyards and apartments that Heyland's studio was located.

In 1875 the Rebecchino was demolished to create the current Duomo square.
